Narrative:

This story follows the youngest of the gods, Seluna. Recently she has noticed that her offerings and followers have all but disappeared. She decides that there is only one way to find out why that is; to go down and find out for herself. After looking down at a village she notices that everyone is asleep and no one is enjoying her moonlight like they used to. She decides to descend into the outskirts of the town. At first she is alone and there is not a soul in sight. But after walking around for a while she stumbles upon a graveyard. Before she has time to react, a ghoul lunges at her. Moments before the monster attacks her she is saved by a mysterious warrior. This warrior tells her that it is not safe to be out at night because of the monsters that come out to hunt. This character's name is Soren. He is one of the mercenaries hired to slay the monsters that appear in this village. While conversing with him, Seluna learns that these monsters have been attacking under the cover of the moon for the last five years. Not only that, but there are not many who have the proper magic and strength to deal with the monsters. She quickly realizes that this is the reason for her decline in followers. The people of this world blame her for not protecting them. In order to regain her followers and help the people she decides to create a new spell to help them vanquish the monsters. Using her musical abilities she creates a spell that must be sung to be effective. This magic will instantly purify and destroy any monster who hears it. Seluna then travels into the dreams of the villagers and teaches them this spell. In a short amount of time this magic was passed along through the land and the monsters were vanquished. After that, Selunas followers returned and people began to enjoy her moonlight again.

Aesthetic/ Art Style:
The particular colors and art style used in this narrative is meant to represent that of an old fantasy story. This style could be classified as vector art or folk art. The idea is that the characters do not have any specific sharp features and it feels similar to a child's picture book that you would have seen as a kid. These kinds of stories always have some sort of lesson built into them to teach children.

Meaning:

This story is meant to poke at the constraints of relationships. It shows how there is always a give and take in any relationship, even the one between a goddess and her followers. Selunas followers stopped giving her praise and offerings when they stopped feeling loved and protected. By giving them the means to protect and defend themselves from the monsters, the people began respecting and appreciating her again.

Research

The Hidden Goddess

This concept began with my interest in mythology. Specifically I tend to be drawn towards Greek and Norse mythology. When creating my pantheon of gods for this world I researched the main Greek and Norse pantheon. I liked how many of the deities held domain over multiple things, so I wanted to continue that within this world.

Greek Pantheon:
- Zeus: God of the sky
- Poseidon: God of the seas
- Hera: Goddess of marriage
- Demeter: Goddess of agriculture, harvest, and fertility of the earth
- Athena: Goddess of wisdom and battle strategy
- Apollo: God of the sun, music, and poetry
- Artemis: Goddess of Animals and hunting
- Ares: God of war
- Aphrodite: Goddess of love, beauty, and relationships
- Hephaestus: God of fire and craftsmanship
- Hermes: God of travel and trade
- Hestia: Goddess of the hearth and home
- Dionysus: God of wine

Norse Pantheon:
- Odin: God of war and the dead
- Frigg: Goddess of motherhood
- Thor: God of thunder and weather
- Loki: God of mischief and deception
- Balder: god of light and peace
- Hod: God of darkness and winter
- Heimdall: God of fire and war
- Tyre: God of war
- Njord: God of sea and wind
- Feyr: God of fertility, peace, and prosperity
- Freya: Goddess of love, beauty, and magic

Narrative Background:
When it came to coming up with the storyline for this animation I wanted some kind of lesson or concept to be woven within the story. This idea is referred to as Didactic stories. These stories are meant to impart knowledge or lessons on readers and listeners. This concept can be tied back to mythology. Many myths and legends we know were created to explain some kind of phenomenon that people at the time could not explain. Things like the origin of the sun, the seasons, or natural disasters were often explained using mythology. These stories can be seen in almost every culture across the world including Greek and Norse Mythology.

Animation References:
There are many animations that I take great inspiration from including Spider-verse, Arcane, Vox Machina, Winx, Gravity Falls, and How to train Your Dragon. Specifically for this idea I wanted to stick to a simple and unique art style like the ones used in Gravity Falls and The Owl House. Both Gravity Falls and The Owl House use highly stylized designs. Taking some inspiration for these I created a unique style for this animation that also plays on the simple designs typically found in children's books.

Testing Cliches:
Prompt: Create a short story about the goddess Seluna (goddess of the moon and music). This is a world of fantasy with monsters. She has noticed her offerings and followers have all but disappeared. She decides that there is only one way to find out why that is; to go down and find out for herself. While down in a village she meets a young warrior named Soren.
